UK/Japan Heart
We are looking forward to welcoming you at the "Cardiac Electro-Mechanical Function: Cell-organ cross-talk revealed via integration of experiments and models" Satellite Symposium to IUPS 2009 World Congress.

Our Satellite will be hosted by the team of Prof. Keiji Naruse at Okayama University.

The workshop will start on Sunday 2 August. All participants who travel from the main IUPS meeting at Kyoto will meet at Kyoto station (detailed location to follow) and take a chartered bus. This bus will take you to Shin-Okayama port, where a ferry will be waiting for you. The ferry will cruise Setouchi Sea to go close to the foot of the Seto O-hashi Bridge, one of the biggest bridges in the world, then head to Naoshima. The chartered ferry will go directly to the pier at of Benesse House. As shown on the map, your accommodation is located in the area called PARK. After check-in, we will move to the MUSEUM site (transfer arranged by van), and have a welcome drink and the introductory lecture at MUSEUM.

On Monday 3 August, there will be a whole-day meeting (lunch will be served), followed by dinner (see the programme for detail), held at PARK Hall.

On Tuesday 4 August, there will be a half-day session (lunch will be served), also at PARK hall. For the return to Okayama, we will not charter ferry or bus, so that you can spend as much extra time at Benesse House as you wish. The public ferry port (Miyanoura port) is about 10-15 min by bus from the hotel (free hotel shuttle). There are three ferries for Uno port in the afternoon (see the time table below). From Uno port, you can take either a bus or a JR train (change at Chaya-machi) for Okayama. Please pay for the return journey yourself (280 JPY for the ferry, and 640 JPY for the bus; see wikitravel.org/en/Naoshima for detail).

We hope you enjoy both the symposium and Naoshima.

Report on the Satellite Symposium:

The 36th International Congress of Physiological Science, Satellite Symposium #8 on Cardiac Electro-Mechanical Function: Cell-organ cross-talk revealed via integration of experiments and models was held at Benesse Art Centre, Naoshima Island, Kagawa, JAPAN on 2-4 August 2009. The meeting was supported by the UK Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) and the British Embassy in Japan, and benefited from further contributions by a number of private and public Japanese sources.

At the meeting, researchers from several countries including Japan, the UK, Russia, and New Zealand presented their ongoing research into integrated cardiac electro-mechanical function, focussing on the benefit of combining 'wet' and 'dry' lab techniques to study at sub-cellular/cell/organ level behaviour.

The introductory lecture by Dr Ryutaro Himeno (RIKEN) outlined Japan's 'Next Generation Supercomputer' programme, a public-private partnership with Fujitsu to build the world's most powerful (10 petaflop) system, highlighting that international collaboration was required to tackle the Grand Challenge of modelling biological systems, and encouraging access to the new infrastructure.

At the 'subcellular level' session, membrane voltage sensing mechanisms and their modelling were discussed. Properties of a new class of mechano-sensitive ion channel, and techniques for single molecule imaging were introduced.

At 'cellular level' session, cellular response to stretch, effects on calcium handling by various organellas including mitochondria, and models of drug-induced arrhythmogenesis were presented. Several new approaches to quantitative analysis of cell modells were introduced, as was a new pancreatic beta cell model.

At 'multi-cellular ~ organ level' session, new approaches to linking micro to macro were reviewed. These included synchrotron radiation techniques to study contractile filament interactions in norm and disease, signalling cascades, a novel approach to controlling local and regional mechanical environments in myocardium, studies of mechano-electric and mechano-energetic interactions, and the application of hydrogel materials for cardiac cell culture. Also, multi-cellular and whole heart modeling approaches were discussed.

The meeting concluded with a round table summary of insights and ideas, as well as a discussion of new collaborations among attendees.
